Victoria Embankment Gardens Summer Market aims to be London’s first designer street market at the beautiful, historic embankment Gardens. In this YouTube vlog I go to this outdoor event, a market with live music in Victoria embankment gardens just next to the river Thames & embankment tube station.
This is a brand new and unique event for 2015 by city showcase markets but the organisers are not new to this for the past few years they have been holding a similar event in Soho and are responsible for the Dalston Christmas market.
The event aims to bring together up and coming artisans, artists, fashion designers and jewellery designers; The Embankment Summer Market also features Street Food, the Meantime Bar, a farmer’s market, lawn games and 3 days of live music and entertainment for all. The event’s charity partner is The Connection at St Martins, which helps homeless people here in the heart of Central London.
It’s a pretty scenic location on the North bank of the Thames between Embankment Station and the Royal Courts of Justice and Somerset House. And its next to one of my favourite wine bars and its outdoor terrace area in the whole of London – Gordons – which is also believed to be the oldest – established in 1890, but that is another story.
It’s a beautiful day here in London on the day – sunny with fluffy white clouds and a gentle breeze by the river. I was planning to go the previous day but it just rained all day & the met office have issued serve wind warnings nationwide for the start of summer which does not sound fun – summer here in the UK is one thing – unpredictable!
But thankfully today is a complete contrast to yesterday it looks like it will be a nice day – lets hope its stays this way. The UK has produced some of the worlds best fashion designers however the British have a reputation for being at best eccentric when it comes to style & fashion – words like bold & innovative are used to describe our dress sense, but what they mean is bad.
And a lot of this I think has to do with the weather here. The Italians & the French have it easy – they can commit to spring & they can have a summer wardrobe – linen suits & suede loathers – the only thing they need to be anxious about is looking cool. Here in the UK on any given day we can have all the seasons in one day so you cant as they do in southern Europe just set of in summer with a pair of sunglasses looking cool you have to be prepared for the adventure that is British weather.
The weather chaps say “its gonna be another unsettled day mostly everywhere” – what they mean is At any moment a warm sunny day can turn nasty – sudden & dramatic drops in temperature & torrential rain by lunch followed by a minor heat wave in the afternoon with Arctic lows after dark.
The tourists here look cool in summer when the sun is shinning, looking at us like were crazy wearing shorts & a coat – or a summer dress and wet weather boots – but one sudden down pour of freezing rain in the middle of summers day and there all sodden & trudging around and we are warm, dry & good to go. Just take a look at the images from the biggest UK outdoor event of the year, the Glastonbury festival to see it in its most extreme – it looks kinda nuts but it works come rain or shine.
This is a not for profit event – so what’s the aim? – its charity partner is a charity called connections linked to St martins in the fields church who do a lot of great work helping homeless people. And purely by chance They keep popping up in my vlogs one of my early ones was a visit to café in the crypt below the actual church itself over the road from here in Trafalgar square where ultimately all the profits support the work of the church including this charity.
