Pizza Pilgrims + Bar Italia Soho
Today I visit pizza pilgrims restaurant in London’s Soho. Then Bar Italia Soho for some coffee and cake. Pizza Pilgrims serve amazing Italian inspired pizza. Originally cooking and serving Pizza as street food from the back of a Piaggio ape van. And now with restaurants in Exmouth market, kingly court and also here on Dean street. Check out the Youtube vlog of my trip here:
The two founders of Pizza Pilgrims found themselves working regular jobs here in London but dreamed of opening a pizza business. A few hurdles stood in their way, no experience of the restaurant business or also making pizza. So undeterred they quit there jobs and set their sights on establishing a food truck. The smallest truck you could get, a Piaggio Ape and fitting it with a pizza oven.
So to overcome their lack of experience they flew to the South of Italy to collect the little van. Then began the pizza pilgrimage hence the name. They set out from the very South of Italy in the little van. They travelled the length of Italy to get the van back to London. Also the trip was also to learn as much about Italian pizza as possible along the way.
The pizza truck was a huge success and so restaurants followed. The first one they opened was the one I visit in Soho’s Dean street. I decided to try the Neapolitan classic, the Margherita. Pizza pilgrims Margherita was simple yet so delicious. A sough dough base, parmesan, basil and olive oil. I also added a little of their chilli oil to spice things up.
Bar Italia Soho
After the amazing pizza at Pizza pilgrims I head around the corner to another Italian inspired spot, Bar Italia Soho.
Bar Italia Soho first opened in 1949 so has become a London institution. They serve classic Italian style coffee and espresso and serve Italian inspired food and delicious cakes and snacks all day. I try the espresso and a custard tart.
Bar Italia Soho is open from 7am until 5am the following morning. Its always full of characters and as vibrant as Soho itself. Bar Italia Soho use a unique and secret blend of espresso beans. They make their signature Italian style Espresso based drinks using their special blend and a vintage Gaggia coffee machine.
There is a huge and striking poster of boxer Rocky Marciano behind the counter. The poster was a gift from the Marciano family as he was a friend of the store and a fan of the coffee and food. One of many famous customers who have enjoyed a trip to Bar Italia Soho over the years. The walls however are lined with pictures of regulars rather than celebrities who are the real lifeblood of the cafe.
Don’t forget to also check out my Youtube vlog of my trip. Below are the links to the places visited websites. So if your in London’s Soho both definitely worth a visit. A little taste of Italy right here in London. Arrivederci!
